Very interesting post here from Dave’s Whiteboard on complex learning particularly in terms of the detailed combination of learning and performance support. The approach being suggested here, reminds me of Klein’s Applied Cognitive Task Analysis (googled here) as a mechanism for experts to think through the processes of skillful practice.
I’m glad you found the post interesting, Peter. It’s sometimes a tough slog through van Merrienboer and Kirschner’s book, though this behind-the-scenes wrestling with concepts certainly has me paying more attention than I ordinarily would.
Steps 4, 5, and 6 of their model will go further into domain models, cognitive strategies, and mental models.
